Review: Tough Love – Web in Travel 2009

WIT – 5 years on – Web In Travel celebrated its 5th birthday and even though it was my first WIT, I came away with the understanding that the conference has depth and sincerity that can only be achieved through trust.

Stage for WIT 2009

Stage for WIT 2009

On arrival, I was handed a program guide and tucked inside was a list of what must be the who’s who of the online travel industry that were attending.

One of the Many Panels of Experts

One of the Many Panels of Experts

I am now going to proceed and summarise my WIT 2009 journey in the best way I know – the social media way = keywords.

Enlightening, profound, humorous, creative, conflicting, old ways, new ways, homemade cookies, social media, engagement, search, entrepreneurship, mentors, students, Twitter, status, community, art, opinions, fear, deals, Facebook, style, value, graffiti, empathy, monitor, react, pre-emptive, classic, roses, luxury, budget, holistic, experience, destinations, in your face, google, to serve, passion, tough love, did I say Facebook?

NEW: Twitter Roosters @ WIT

NEW: Twitter Roost @ WIT

Special mention needs to be made relating to the events discussion I witnessed, even with prompting by distinguished moderator – there seemed to be no obvious understanding or relevance or decisive recognition of how social media might have an enormous impact on the events business. I can only direct those in the events business to a review of an event I was involved in that clearly shows how events can deliver superior results if you engage a community online in somewhere like Facebook.

TWINE branches Growth | Fast Company

Nova Spivack of Twine | Photograph by Charlie Nucc

APLINK likes TWINE but also check out http://tagfoot.com

From Fast Company newsletter – Google a common query, such as “movie tickets,” and you’ll get 55 million hits. The first few — Fandango, AMC Theatres — are legitimate. Then they trail off, until by page 15, you’re awash in come-ons like “Get Your Hannah Montana Concert 3D Movie Tickets!!” Alas, I’m too late.

Such chaos hits home for Nova Spivack. Before he started his own company, Radar Networks, the 39-year-old entrepreneur and grandson of late management guru Peter F. Drucker, had so many virtual folders and bookmarks, he’d routinely lose track of important messages and links. Since then, he has watched social news and bookmarking services such as Digg and Delicious the latter sold to Yahoo for a reported $30 million garner avid followings for helping people find and store new information.

altsearchengines.com is all about search – itsReal

Google is THE dominant player in search and with its vast resources it is no wonder. Google’s rise almost overnight is spectacular and from last nite’s Vinton Cerf’s presentation organised by The Digital Movement (TDM) they already have an IPv6 version ready for major release when the time is right. But as you will read there are literally thousands of search engines out in the market like my client’s recruit.net, which are useful and are making market niches for themselves.

Thanks to Charles Knight of altsearchengines.com more of us consumers are able to know about these inspired search companies – His amazing blog style site can keep you abreast of the latest in search technology and the market players battling it out to crave a slice for themselves in the lucrative search market.

Charles just became even more famous with his interview on AcessMyLibrary.com, an excerpt is below

AltSearchEngines

SYNOPSIS

AltSearchEngines is a blog that provides news, reviews, and analysis of specialized and emerging search engines. It’s a fascinating window into the non-Google search engine world, and it’s a necessary hangout for search engine fans. We’re not sure that the next Google is here yet, but the pretenders are an engaging lot nonetheless.

PRODUCER

AltSearchEngines, http://www.altsearchengines.com

So you think you know all about search engines? OK, you use Google all the time, and sometimes you use its specialty engines including Scholar or Blogs. You occasionally use Yahoo! or Ask.com. And admit it, you’ve become quite fond of YouTube, and some of you even have MySpace or Facebook profiles. Finally, you’re probably adept at a few proprietary online services. Basically, you think you have this online search thing figured out.

But not so fast. Are you using QueryCAT and factbites.com for targeted fact retrieval? Can you analyze the respective metasearch capabilities of Intelways, Ixquick, Sputtr.com, and TurboScout? Is KoolTorch a better visualization engine than Liveplasma? Well, maybe you don’t know as much as you think you do.Maybe you’re not a Master of the Search Engine Universe after all. Maybe you need to spend some time at AltSearchEngines (www .altsearchengines.com).

No Google Here

AltSearchEngines is a combination directory, news service, review source, rating agency, job post, and general blogosphere for alternate search engines (ASEs) operated by Charles Knight. He describes himself on the site as an “industry analyst and former SEO.” On AltSearchEngines, he’s the manager of a lively site that ASE users and developers visit frequently.

recruit.net is the google of job search – millions of jobs – itsReal

A recent conversation with a well known Singapore blogger opened my eyes to a little known fact and that is, even though Recruit.net is well known for giving away a free iPhone, there still appears to be some confusion amongst many about what recruit.net really is about, and that the simplest way of explaining recruit.net is that it is the google of job search….

……Every day thousands of companies are posting new job openings on the internet.

How do you find them all? Do you have the time to search all the different web sites for that special job?

Recruit.net is an award winning job search engine that searches and discovers new job postings for you. You have free and instant access to millions of jobs from thousands of companies with one simple search.

Recruit.net search technology crawls the internet to find job listings from corporate web sites, job boards, recruitment agencies, newspapers, classifieds, associations and more.

Recruit.net does the work, so you don’t have to.

Millions of jobs, Thousands of companies, One search.

Can Archive.org achieve world peace or just be a vehicle for sadistic maniacs -itsReal

Yesterday’s Digital Life…whilst cheering our Game producers in Singapore, managed to shock APLINK with its FEATURE story “Screening the Screen”… DL with its massive distribution in SG provided a full page AD/Editorial for Archive.org with all its blood thirsty archives of violence…placed under the label of History….

I guess with this post I too am spreading the word of this historical video collection, yet I think I am SANE in most respects – however the graphic description by the author, Annalee Newitz, contributing editor at Wired Magazine, sent alarm bells on high volumne in my head…

“… what if you were just a little insane and seeing these videos was all you needed to tip you over the edge…”

Archive.org appears to be alot more than violence but i wonder how many might think it just another youtube, if not for the relatively uncensored content it offers for the curious.

The Internet Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public. http://www.arhive.org
