Design News – Digital Media Festival to kick off with screening of Internet films – TAXI Design Network

PRESS RELEASE

October 2008

The inaugural Digital Media Festival 2008 (DMfest) will be held in Singapore this October 2008.

With the theme “Television 2.0: Internet Services and New Media Mashup”, the event focuses on how the defining characteristics of the Web 2.0 world – such as interactivity, user-generated content, social networking and collaboration – will impact on the digital media industry of the future.

The two-day event will kick off with an Opening Night Film and Video Screening, where delegates will be able to catch the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD; Star Wreck, the most popular Internet movie ever; and other ground-breaking machinima and open source movies.

The second day programme will feature a full-day conference covering topics such as the TV 2.0 Infrastructure; the move of serialised television onto the Internet; Community Television; Digital Production and Visualisation; Web-Enabled Business Models and Channels of Distribution; and Web 2.0 and Building Online Communities. Speakers include the filmmaker behind Star Wreck, an Internet TV pioneer, broadcast personalities, social media gurus and a host of other illuminaries and thought leaders in digital media.

DMfest is organised by the Digital Media Chapter of the Singapore infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF).

“DMfest comes at an opportune time, as the ubiquity of high-speed communications and the proliferation of devices transform the way content is delivered to the end user, and how the end user interacts with this content. This opens up new opportunities for our infocomm and media production communities,” said Ng Chong Khim, Chairman of the SiTF’s Digital Media Chapter.

“DMfest will provide infocomm and media production communities with a platform to establish partnerships and share their expertise, so that they can better position themselves to tap on these opportunities,” he added.

The event also incorporates fringe activities such as a Business Matching Service and the MDA Programme Awareness Forum, as well as an exhibition component featuring a Mobile Applications and Content Showcase, Games & Simulations Showcase (GXA) and Sponsors Showcase.

Gary Hazlitt Twinity Machinima with SilkCharm explained – itsReal

…One thing that is very impressive (in Twinity) off the block is the scale of the world built, unlike Second Life, at scale and gives a real sense of distance in comparison with the real world (which Twinity is focusing on).

So for this next Gary Hazlitt machinima I fiddled with SilkCharm’s avatar (or is that SilkCharm herself?) uploading some portrait faces to map onto the face & body and equipped her with suitable running attire fore this ‘Run Lola Run‘ lookalike (and big soundalike thanks to Twyker’s music). The film features Franka Potente running around the backstreets of Berlin trying to get some money for her criminal boyfriend (and goes back in time twice). SilkCharm though was just getting some exercise…

Introducing Bitropolis in Twinity – itsReal

Introducing Bitropolis

Bitfilm_main_visual

The countdown has begun for fans of digital film culture. In the next few weeks the virtual film festival site – Bitropolis – will be opening in Twinity and welcoming filmmakers and film aficionados alike.

What is Bitropolis?

Bitropolis is the virtual venue of the Bitfilm Festival and can be found deep underground in the 3D world of Twinity.

Bitropolis_image_0The Bitfilm Festival is a festival of digital film, dedicated to showcasing the best digitally animated films on the planet. This year, for the very first time, the festival is being held in both the real world and the virtual world of Twinity.

The creative hub of Bitropolis is naturally the cinema which will be screening highlights from the Bitfilm Festival program. This is the place to go to watch the latest in innovative animation. After the movie, join fellow cineastes for drinks in the bar or dance the night away in the night club.

Rent your cube!

Bitropolis also gives users the chance to show off their creative talent. The cinema is encircled by an art park of studio cubes. Every beta user of Twinity can rent their own cube free of charge.

Bitropolis_image_1

A studio cube is your own personal venue in which to host special film screenings or get creative with music, videos, photography, and artwork. Style the interior of your cube and create virtual objects to share with other avatars. Just think of the cube as a showcase for your work

The Bitfilm Festival

The Bitfilm Festival is already in its 9th year and focuses on films that use digital technology in a creative and challenging way. The festival program encompasses a wide spectrum of digital film from 3D animations and internet flash movies to machinimas shot live in computer games, real-time renderings, and short films for handheld devices.

There is an award up for grabs in each of the six festival categories, and you can help pick this year’s most talented filmmakers.

The 2008 Bitfilm Festival runs from 1 May to 12 July. To find out more about the festival or vote for your favorite film, visit www.bitfilm.com/festival
