ASIA UNCUT – EPISODE 1 – Video Segments Host Jon Niermann

Jon meets with Hong Kong based film director and fight choreographer Antony Szeto, to unleash a little *&W*$#)(%% on him. Turns out transforming Jon into a bona fide stuntman will take years… and hours of fast-cut editing.

Singapore’s very own Jack & Rai are an emerging singer-song writer duo penning soulful and original songs. Rai reveals the story of how they became Jack & Rai, and not the other way around…

Watch an American-idol showdown between Jon and James Blunt singing his hit song “Beautiful” in a Chinatown. The singer-songwriter talks about his experiences and inspiration during the Kosovo War, and the benefits of selling his sister on E-Bay.

Writer comedian TJ Johnson, a.k.a the (funny) Barack Obama of Singapore, chats with Jon about maids, aphrodisiacs, and his love of hecklers in Singapore over a pungent plate of durian.

Actors Ethan Hawke and Simon Russell Beale log into a video conference with Jon to talk about the Bridge Project, Shakespeare, Anton Chekhov and chewing gum.

Tired of flipping burgers, these two guests decided to follow their passion and are now living the dream. Together, Michael Chugg and Sat Bisla represent the two most important parts of the music business: discovering the talent, and then getting people to buy their music. With artists like Cold Play and Robbie Williams on speed dial, they’ve got to have the jobs that most of us would die for.

Asia Uncut with Harlem Globe Trotters Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner

This week on Asia Uncut – tune in to Star World…

Be sure to catch the 13th episode this Friday 11.30pm SE Asia, 10pm Phillipines and 11pm Middle East on Star World, and if you cant make that, the repeat is on Sunday!

Toshio Matsura

Acclaimed Japanese DJ Toshio Matsura has a knack for taking old retro tracks into the modern era. Jon chats with him about remixing everything from Earth, Wind and Fire to Astor Piazzolla, and tries to find out what “Deep House, Broken Beat” really means…

Harlem Globe Trotters

For 82 years, the Harlem Globetrotters have thrilled audiences around the world. Through a combination of athleticism, theatre and comedy, they have played more than 20,000 exhibition games with a 98.4% winning streak. Our intrepid co hosts Sheik Haikel and Cheston Harder decide to take up the challenge and head down to the courts.

Sheikh Haikel

Asia Uncut’s very own co host Sheikh Haikel joins Jon for a chat at the Singapore Flyer. After winning The Asia Bagus Grand Championship in 1991, this “phat” rapper-writer-broadcaster-cum-actor has established himself throughout Singapore and Malaysia.

Taylor McFerrin

A descendent of the first African-American singer to appear on the New York Metropolitan Opera, and son of Bobby McFerrin Jr, best known for his 1998 hit song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, Taylor McFerrin is carving out his own niche in the music industry, and is redefining the concept of the one-man show.

Earl Okin

Jazz comedy legend Earl Okin has played for an eclectic audience that ranges from the King and Queen of Sweden, to Sasha Baron Cohen aka Borat. Okin tells Sheik Haikel his stories about jazz, performing, and his love of suits.

Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner

Asia Uncut and co host Colby Miller travel to the Mecca of the movie industry: Hollywood.  In the hunt for celebrities, they stumble upon Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, who talk about their latest romantic comedy, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.

Kris Dayanti:

Jon welcomes Kris Dayanti – Indonesia’s highest paid and most successful singer – to Singapore. Starting with her first album at 12, this Indonesian icon admits she was first paid with a chocolate bar.

– See Previous Episodes of Asia Uncut on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/asiauncut

Filmmaker Royston Tan has won many regional film festival awards and is one of  TIME Magazine’s “Top 20 Asian Heroes” but all he wishes for, is a fried chicken meal with the local censorship officials, Jon picks the bones on this one.
Sheikh Haikel investigates if the Guinness World Record holder of “The World’s Most Tattooed Man”, Lucky Diamond Rich has really left no skin un-inked, and checks out Lucky’s latest prized ink.
Legendary DJ Gilles Peterson has the Midas’ touch, catapulting the careers of Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and Erykah Badu, and has a music festival stamped with his name. Jon steps up his street cred as the ‘King of Kool’ visits.
Sheikh catches up on the grim reality of street busking with Low Intensity, and hustles for these freewheeling song strummers at the price of a lesson: keep your hat close, but keep the hustlers closer.
Musician George Duke is the pinnacle of funk, having collaborated with the late Frank Zappa and having his own eclectic brand of  R&B.  Watch Duke jam some pink keys while Sheikh gets in sync with the funk.

On the sixth episode of Asia Uncut, aired on the 17th April 2009, Jon had the pleasure of interviewing anti-drug crusader, Veronica Colondam, who founded the anti-drug organisation, Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB).
Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB), known as “Loving Our Nation’s Children”, is an independent non-profit social foundation started in August 1999. It is founded out of concern for the increasing incidence of drug abuse amongst Indonesia’s youth. Their main focus has been primary drug prevention in schools and communities, and ultimately to promote sustainable, income generating development programs in poor and disaster stricken areas of Indonesia.
You can make a generous contribution to this cause by making your bid for the auction of a collaborative art piece created by Jon and German artist Hans Mendler, as seen on the sixth episode.
