WITH thunder and lightning and a tender plea to humanity, Beijing amazed the world last night.
On a steamy night in the Chinese capital, the host citys heart-thumping Opening Ceremony side-stepped politics, bomb threats and pollution worries and delivered an audio-visual feast of dragons, dynasties and pyrotechnics.
It climaxed with the lighting of the giant cauldron draped in red atop the Birds Nest by Chinese gymnastics champion Li Ning, who captured three gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, the Olympics in which China returned after a 32 year absence.
