GDN: BigWorld Technology 2.0 to Show at GDC

“The overlap between games and virtual worlds and social networks is not looming – it’s been here for some time,” noted Gavin Longhurst, VP of BigWorld “We have looked at pioneering efforts in the space – including those from our own customer base with virtual worlds like Metaversum’s ‘Twinity’ built on our core technology, and see the possibilities and flexibility to enable greater social connectivity and content injections into future games and virtual worlds. It’s about empowering developers to provide users the ability to communicate and share with each other with the ease and immediacy they find in the rest of their online experience. Tempered of course, within the context of that game, narrative or online virtual experience.”

A night for tech start-ups in Singapore | Techgoondu

Techgoondu at Geek Terminal Singapore

Start-ups who presented include: (see original post for links)

* Twinity (Jeremy Snyder): a 3D online-world that replicates real world cities in a virtual environment. The city of Berlin has already been launched, and both London and Singapore will be up later this year. According to Jeremy, they have about a 100,000 sign-ups since the launch of Twinity in September last year in 2008.

* Brandtology (Aaron Koh): a social media monitoring start-up that help companies makes sense of the big bad web by mining sentiments from it. Brandtology is founded by CEO Eddie Chao, who previously incubated managed security services player e-Cop that was acquired by Temasek in 2007.

* Makeaffinity (Thomas Tan): ever wanted to control robots over the internet to slug it out in a death match? Now you can with Makeaffinity’s robot sharing platform, which allows folks to play with and make web robots without much programming whatsoever.

* 2359 Media (Hong Ting and Wenhan): founded by a trio of passionate entrepreneurs who just finished their NUS studies and a stint in Silicon Valley. 2359 Media is an advertising platform for mobile phones utilizing location based services.

* Jorbb (Shen Heng): Most job advertising portals cater to the white-collar worker. Shen wanted to create a portal specifically for blue-collar workers — part-timers, trade promoters, temp staff — and Jorbb is the result.

* Neat Co (Sarabjit Singh): Neat co, a small US company with a second office in Singapore, was the only physical tech appliance company amongst the presenters. Showcased was their contextually aware OCR reader, a smart scanning solution for receipts and the like.

* Phokki (Sean Seah): And lastly, Phokki, a start-up which turns your photos into works of art via a platform that links artists to end users directly. I’ve written a post on Phokki before.

We had a couple of other start-ups who didn’t present like seemeCV and Airvert. Not to worry. Due to good interest in this first event from anecdotal feedback (thanks to those who gave theirs!), the Techgoondus will think about running this on a semi-regular basis once in a few months. Will keep you readers posted if we do run this again. Meanwhile, if you’re interested in ideas on this front, feel free to drop me an email.

social networks new GOLD – market research

Now will people become more PRIVATE in facebook !!

Gay or straight, your Facebook is their fortune

FACEBOOK is planning to exploit the vast amount of personal information it holds on its 150 million members by creating one of the world’s largest market research databases.

In an attempt to finally cash in on the social networking site, once valued at $US15 billion ($23.6 billion), it will soon allow multinational companies to selectively target its members in order to research the appeal of new products. Companies will be able to pose questions to specially selected members based on such intimate details as whether they are single or married and even whether they are gay or straight.

Facebook

The company, which has struggled to make money from advertising, has been demonstrating the benefits of its new instant polling tool to business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Berlin, 29 January 2009 – It’s the turn of a new masked superhero to enter the 3D online world Twinity: THE SPIRIT, the latest movie to be promoted by Sony Pictures and CineStar in Twinity’s virtual CUBIX cinema before the official movie release.

For the very first time, the Twinity 3D community can get into the spirit of the movie outside the cinema as part of the THE SPIRIT promotion. Wearing a THE SPIRIT mask transforms the entire online world into the look of the comic strip adaptation – in black-and-white and brilliant red. Twinity is inviting all its masked members to take part in a screenshot and machinima competition. The most creative photos or movies shot in THE SPIRIT look and submitted to contest@twinity.com by 28 February have the chance to win exciting themed prizes.

TidalBlog: Did Second Life and OpenSim just eat Google’s lunch?

The answer is probably “no” but it is interesting to expore precisely why.

There is a widely held belief that Google and Microsoft could easily turn their geospatial products into mass market virtual worlds containing avatars. While virtual world products such as Twinity have indeed focused on replicating real-life locations, neither of the major players has, as far as I know, stated this as a near-term goal. Moreover, I am reminded of Cory Ondrejka’s observation that the now-defunct Google Lively was room-based to facilitate balancing resource requirements, something that may well prove challenging on the scale of Google Earth. This seems to be borne out in a recent interview with Popcha!, one of the Lively third-party developers, who suggest it was a combination of economic climate, technical scaling issues and uncertain business model that ultimately did for Lively.

Twinity on BBC’s Click program – itsReal

Over the weekend, Twinity was featured in a Click episode on the BBC. You can watch the episode by choosing your preferred video format and bit rate from “The Show” section on that page. The piece on Twinity starts at about the 1 minute mark and continues for about 8 minutes. There’s also a written piece about Twinity accompanying the show.

Wouldn’t it be weird if you could create a copy of you, so there were two of you wandering around, in two places at the same time.

The piece does a good job of showing the vision of Twinity – enhancing your real life.

Jochen Hummel, Metaversum: “With Twinity you are not escaping from your life but rather you are enhancing your life. It is a platform for doing a lot of things. Some people want to stay in touch with friends and family, you can do this in Twinity.”

It’s a social environment for meeting people, visiting galleries, or online shopping. Users are encouraged to create avatars that look just like them so they’ll be recognised, and to use their real names.

It’s also a space for virtual tourism. The realism of this platform could help you plan a trip here, or just help you get your bearings before you arrive.

It’s a fun piece to watch. Enjoy!
