Singapore Girl (SIA) gets WED to TBWA – itsReal

Congrats to the team at TBWA Singapore. It is an inspiring win for me, as only 10 years ago TBWA started in Singapore with only 2 staff. My team at the moment at TPWC is 5 strong, with only one year under our wings, who knows what might be around the corner for us.

I wonder if TBWA have seen the potential of virtual worlds like second life to increase SIA’s brand in this unique 3D Real Life global marketing platform…will some of that $50 million a year budget be earmarked to launch in virtual worlds ? I hope to see SIA as the first airline to open a ticketing office and passenger lounge in second life, just imagine the SIA and TBWA official wedding could be held in second life covered by the Reuters in-world reporter.

Just as a side note: Recently when I was checking out office space in second life for our SL office…i took a short helicopter flight to have a look at the property…hmmm during the flight i was unfortunately dumped out of the helicopter and fell to the ground as I did not have security clearance. I was rescued and cleared with security, on we went and landed directly at the front door of what is now our office at Silicon City. Maybe SIA could operate SIA branded helicopters in SL…have not seen the airline use them in real life yet !!!

Dropped out of a chopper in SECOND LIFE ?
Sounds to me like a stunt in MATRIX…

Certainly, opening an office in Second Life could be an interesting initiative for SIA, but first and foremost, TBWA must shake the Pinkerton Syndrome overtones of the Brand communication set by BATEY Ads a few decades ago. The big idea is to move from “Singapore Girl” to “Singapore Lady”.

See my article on the subject:

  2. I think you knighted Ian Batey prematurely, certainly ahead of Queen Elizabeth II, the only person entitled to knight anybody. I know the fellow deserves it, but he is still, alas, a commoner like the rest of us.
By the way, the idea of using virtual time to do virtual advertising in virtual worlds which are not real is a waste of virtual effort.
Nic says: get real, and don’t waste your time on nonsense. The poor incompetents at Guinness stout are doing stupid things like websites- IT’S A BEER FOR GOODNESS SAKE- get down to the pub and buy some- while the brand continues its remorseless plunge down the toilet. In fact sales of Guinness are so bad in the UK that none is brewed in England any more and what little there is, is trucked over from Guinness’s home in Ireland, where incidentally, sales are also in free fall. The SUNDAY TIMES, from that nice Mr Murdoch, in a recent article said that the original brewery site in Dublin (founded 1759) is now worth more as real estate than as a brewery. This shows what wasting your mind on senseless virtual crap does to your stock, instead of tackling real advertising and marketing issues about a product which few people buy any more.
In fact, Niewart has shown (the UK BRAND REPUBLIC WEBSITE) all that chi-chi advertising and ad awards from all over the world (You know the sort of thing:enter it everywhere and it’s bound to win something, in some category or other), is in straight line correlation to toiletsville.
The more clever the ads, the worse the sales, for OVER 30 YEARS! And the client kept buying the ideas, and the agencies kept producing.
    Now that, is a crime.
