THE Singapore Tattoo Show at the Singapore Expo this weekend is an event of firsts.

The convention happening from Jan 9-11 is the first of its kind in Singapore and the first time tattoo artists from Asia and the west will come together and create art side by side.

The convention aims to breakdown stereotypes and the stigma of tattoos being the mark of gangsters and convicts.

‘The fusion of east and west tattoo artistry has been a personal passion of mine and the opportunity to share and educate the public with a community of creative artists is a dream come true,’ said show organiser Kirby Lian.

The owner of Utopia Tattoo Studio also said the convention was four years in the making and long overdue.

The event sees over 120 artists and exhibitors from around the world come together for the love of the art. A crowd of over 5,000 visitors from around the region are expected to attend the 3-day event.

Some activities at the event include a daily tattoo contest for the exhibitors. Some of the categories they will be judged on are: the best cover up, best tribal tattoo and most realistic tattoo.

Complimenting the live tattooing will be a bikini swim wear fashion show, live band performances and a remote control car drifting competition.

There will also be talks by tattoo luminaries, Chris Garver and Bob Tyrell, as they impart their knowledge and share their experiences with the crowd.

Tickets for the convention go for $18 for a one-day pass and S$50 for a three-day pass. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at www.tattoo.com.sg.

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s first-ever Tattoo Show kicks off at the Singapore Expo on Friday and it is believed to be the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia. One main attraction during the three-day show is Chris Garver from the popular reality TV series, Miami Ink.

Organisers are spending up to S$300,000 for the first-ever Singapore Tattoo Show. With over 100 booths, 21 Singapore tattoo studios will also be showcased, besides other Asian and Western ones.

Another highlight is traditional tattooing from places like Borneo, and the industry hopes to change perceptions about tattooing.

Chris Garver, tattoo expert, Miami Ink, USA, said: “I was in Japan for a long time. There’re a lot of connotations with the Yakuza there. But the percentage of people who get tattoos who are Yakuza is very small compared to the people who aren’t Yakuza. So a lot of it is changing. A lot of American pop culture has influenced tattooing there.”

Kirby Lian, organiser, Singapore Tattoo Show, said: “I have ever tattooed a young 14-year-old girl who came with her mother and they both got the same tattoo on the ankle.”

While hoping to change perceptions, organisers also aim to highlight the tremendous skills involved.

Legends in the industry, such as Paul Booth of Last Rites Tattoo (USA), Robert Hernandez (Spain) and Bob Tyrrell (USA), will also be at the show.

The show was the result of organisers networking in various tattoo conventions overseas. They hope to have at least 15,000 people attend the event.

The organisers are also hoping to make this an annual show and maybe spice things up with performances from rock bands and even a motorbike show. – CNA/vm

Robbie Williams tattoo to get Take That Back – itsReal

Robbie Williams has been dropping hints that he wants to rejoin Take That, the band that has become successful again without him.

He did what all pop stars and footballers do when they want to declare their love for someone, remind themselves of the names of their children, or drive a message home. He got a tattoo. Specifically, he got a Take That symbol tattooed on his right arm.

This idea of saying it with tattoos has potential, I think. Want a bike for Christmas? Have a matchstick drawing of one tattooed on your arm and keep rolling up your sleeve at family meal times.

But on the broader point about whether it is wise to re-form a band like Take That, I’m not so sure. They don’t need him. He doesn’t need them. It will only end in tears, again. Besides, there are the girls to consider, those who cried inconsolably on the day in 1995 when the band said they were going their separate ways. They will feel cheated.

Singapore’s 1st Tattoo Show to educate the art of East West Tattoo Fusion

In another global 1st the Singapore Tattoo Show with Asian Artists from places like Singapore, Taiwan, China and other Asian countries will be side by side with western tattoo artists where fusion between the two cultures and art can take place. It is therefore a true educational journey for participants and visitors to the show who will also be able to get a tattoo and watch live tattooing.

December 2008 – Event organizer, Tattoo.com.sg today announced another global 1st for the 1st Singapore Tattoo Show 2009, to be held at the Singapore Expo Hall 6B from 9 – 11 January 2009. More than 120 Artists are coming to the Tattoo Convention; amongst these are legends in the Tattoo industry such as Paul Booth Last Rites Tattoo, USA, Bob Tyrrell Night Gallery, USA Chris Garver, Miami Ink & Robert Hernandez, Spain.

The Singapore Tattoo Show is unique in more ways than it being the first.
