Why? - FriendFeed does not score high in this analysis, but it’s mostly because of its freshness. The lifestreaming service, launched this year, has seen tremendous growth. Being able to see you and your friend’s YouTube favorites, Twitter tweets, blog posts, and diggs in one location is apparently a winning model. FriendFeed may not have millions of users (yet), but it does have all of the buzz and it will continue to generate astronomical growth and attention.

Why? - Reddit, although nowhere near as influential as large or as powerful as Digg or StumbleUpon, is still a long-standing social news website that drives traffic to many blogs and websites. Its funky alien and active community were enough for Condé Nast (Wired, Vogue, GQ, the New Yorker) to acquire them in 2006. Reddit’s recent move to go open-source and allow others to create their own mini-Reddit communities may pan out to be a game changer. We just have to wait and see to know.

Why? - Yelp isn’t mainstream yet, but in most major metropolitan areas, it is the place to go for information on restaurants, movie theaters, clubs, bars, gyms, and local businesses. Reviews continue to pile in and businesses have begun to react, some by improving their businesses and some with annoying blogs against Yelp. In the end, though, local businesses will simply have to develop strategies to improve their ranking on Yelp or miss out on future customers.

Why? - Digg cannot be discounted by any blogger, website owner, or company. Its millions of users flood user-added websites and articles, sometimes even knocking them out of commission. But the traffic driver can make or break bloggers, it can bring your website attention beyond all of your expectations, and becoming popular on this social media website assures that others like Reddit or StumbleUpon will follow.

It continues to grow at a fast pace, especially internationally. Facebook seems destined to overshadow MySpace, but will another social network uproot Facebook from its perch?

Why? - Information has been fundamentally altered by Wikipedia. Where would you learn about World War 2 before? From a textbook or from Encyclopedia Britannica. How about now? From Wikipedia. Or you could search for Sonic the Hedgehog, or George Lucas, or Michael Arrington. Information is no written and distributed by a few, but by the masses. Even if it sometimes drops in accuracy, it makes up for it by the sheer amount of information Wikipedia has brought to our lives.

Why? - This one shocked me slightly, but after a brief moment of disgust, I realized that MySpace does deserve such a high ranking. Why? Because it still has the largest audience of all social media websites. Because millions upon millions of impressionable kids and teenagers use it as the center of their social lives. Because those impressionable kids stare at that website for over 20 minutes per day. Because those kids are our future.

That’s a scary thought. But it remains that MySpace has been central in the lives of the Internet generation, and its influence cannot be discounted, even if it is in decline.

1) YouTube (5.53 points)

Why? - YouTube revolutionized video as we know it. Think back to ten years ago. Video basically didn’t exist on the web. People used camcorders just as a placeholder for families. The only way you could have your own show was by millions of dollars and a television station that accepted your pilot and series. No candidate feared having a “YouTube” moment.

Now? Billions of videos have been exchanged. We post funny or amazing clips everywhere. We can start our own TV show and gain a following with just a camera (i.e. Gary Vaynerchuk). Video is fundamentally different, TV is fundamentally altered, and the political, social, and economic landscapes have been shaken at their foundations by the rise of online video sharing. YouTube is the master of that domain, which is why I believe it gained the #1 ranking on this list.

ABC journalist Peter Lloyd’s $45k bail | NEWS.com.au.

Lloyd faced court in person this afternoon where he was supported by a local lawyer, ABC news boss John Cameron and a friend.

The well-known journalist wore an orange prison jumpsuit and appeared thin and drawn, with his hands cuffed behind his back.

The judge took brief evidence from Lloyd’s Singaporean friend who said the foreign correspondent would be under his “charge and care” if released.

Mohamed Mazlee Bin Abdul Malik told the judge he had known the 41-year-old since mid-2007, and knew his family, wife and childen.

The judge granted Lloyd’s release with additional conditions that he report to police three times a week, and remain contactable to authorities.

It is understood Lloyd will be released from the Subordintae Court precinct as soon as the paperwork is completed.

It has been almost a year since i wrote this entry, FaceBook Addiction is Growing vs Being a Business Drone in LinkedIn, and 12 months later I find that the then Addiction to facebook, has evolved instead into being, facebook my reliable business companion.

facebook managers to meld very human needs for being entertained while being social online whilst also helping members to be effective and professional to new friends & new clients around the world, LinkedIn remains the stiff business social network where u feel as though you must wear a tie every time you log in. Some of linkedIn’s ice is melting but i doubt that it will ever find the idealized green pastures that facebook offers.

facebook’s new look - which again users get to choose which version they want to work with, is comfortable to use and likable - only about 3 months ago i learnt where the biggest value for members lies - and that is in the newsfeeds from friends. It has now become a regular daily event seeing what my facebook circle and their friends are up to - strangely at the beginning of my facebook journey - i rec’d an email from a biz contact in Australia that warned me about the content i was adding as it was turning up on their news feeds and they actually called my excited postings - SPAM - i think they un-friended me.

Reality shows that the amount you put into facebook - whether social or business, results in what you get out of the experience - it is truly a delight to meet my friends in REAL social occasions and have them comment on what i still excitedly add to facebook every single day…. but Twinity is just around the corner (wink)

SINGAPORE: An Australian television reporter charged with drug trafficking in Singapore has been moved from a local hospital to a prison medical facility, staff at the institutions said on Saturday.

Peter Gerard Lloyd, 41, was discharged from the Changi General Hospital, a hospital information staffer told AFP on Saturday.

Public enquiry officers from the prison service said Peter Gerard Lloyd was in the medical facility at the Changi Prison complex.

Lloyd, of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, is charged with trafficking about one gram (0.035 ounces) of methamphetamine to a Singaporean for S$100 (US$73.5) at a hotel early this month.

He also faces a second charge for allegedly being in possession of about one gram of the stimulant methamphetamine, also known as ‘ice’, at a local hospital.

A district judge and a police prosecutor were at Changi General Hospital on Friday afternoon to lay the charges on Lloyd, who is believed to be suffering from an eye infection.

A Central Narcotics Bureau spokeswoman told AFP that Lloyd has been offered bail and that his case will be next heard in court on Friday.

If convicted of the trafficking charge, Lloyd faces between five and 20 years’ imprisonment and five to 15 strokes of the cane.

An earlier Central Narcotics Bureau statement said investigations showed a 41-year-old Australian was the “supplier” to a Singaporean drug abuser arrested on Wednesday.

It did not name the Australian but said he was under investigation for trafficking a controlled drug.

The Australian was arrested and in the course of follow-up search, the officers recovered a packet of ‘ice’ weighing approximately 0.8 grams, one improvised smoking pipe and six syringes, the statement said.

Lloyd is on leave in Singapore from his posting in New Delhi, the director of ABC News, John Cameron, said on the network’s website.
