SINGAPORE: National Day Parade organisers are already working to build up excitement for the event. It is less than a month to National Day but Singaporeans will not have to wait till then to celebrate. This year’s parade organisers have planned a month’s worth of events to kick start the nation’s birthday.

Col Ang Heng, chairman, Sponsorship and Celebrations, National Day Parade Committee, said: “We believe National Day belongs to all Singaporeans. That’s why we want as many Singaporeans as possible to participate in and own part of this National Day. “That’s why this string of activities will help encourage Singaporeans to come on board and participate in the various degrees in different ways.” There will be a series of weekly roadshows at several shopping malls to bring National Day closer to Singaporeans.

The roadshow will travel to HDB Hub on July 18, Jurong Point on July 25, Tampines Central on August 1 and Marina Square on August 8. It will include winning entries from the photo contest “Singapore My Home” and short film competition “My Pledge”. Lead-up activities will also be held at the Esplanade and eight community clubs.

Koh Tong Seng, chairman, Changi Simei Citizen’s Consultative Committee, said: “There’s limited tickets to go to the Marina platform, so we wanted to bring more residents out from their homes to celebrate together.” Other events include a concert at West Coast Park on August 2 and a behind-the-scenes exhibition of the parade. Singapore will also see its very first National Day Countdown Party held at Clarke Quay on August 8. The National Trades Union Congress’ Youth Wing will also hold celebrations at the Padang with a candlelight vigil.

WANTAGE, England, July 5 (UPI) — A 54-year-old carpenter in Wantage, England, accidentally cut off his own penis while working with a saw, his mother says.

Stuart Keen’s mother, Edna, told The Sunday Telegraph her son had been cutting wood for a cabinet when the saw inflicted the horrific injury. Surgeons were able to reattach the severed appendage, she said.

“Stuart is a carpenter and uses sharp and sometimes dangerous tools,” Keen’s mother said.

“This was an unfortunate accident but these things happen all the time to people in his profession.”

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said paramedics found him bleeding in his bathtub.

“I have spoken to him and he is quite embarrassed about the whole incident,” Keen’s mother told the Telegraph.

Karen “began screaming and shouting about the operation and became extremely threatening,” said a detective. “There were repeated calls to the female surgeon who was extremely scared.” We don’t know what kind of botched procedure could made her freak out, but if she got boobs and a stomach like Tara Reid once had, we understand her reaction, but not the violent threats. Karen, sadly, isn’t the only supermodel to exhibit bad behavior, she’s just one of a few to be actually arrested.

NEARLY nine in ten businesses in the Lothians now want to make social networking on sites like Facebook and Twitter part of their marketing.

A study of firms by Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce found that 87 per cent believed that the sites, as well as the likes of Linkedin, E-academy and Flickr, were thought of as part of their social networking mix.

They said they used the site to contact business clients and prospective customers.

Chamber of Commerce manager Laura Socha said: “Social networking is a relatively recent phenomenon in the world of business-to-business communications but it is astonishing how quickly it has taken off and been accepted as an extra marketing tool.”

She said every option needs to be explored in the current climate.
